Lithuania is a country which gives a tourist an opportunity not only to have a perfect rest but also to enrich a personal view of Eastern Europe with new knowledge and impressions. Not in vain Lithuania is proud of its kings, history and legends.
The name “Lithuania” has a thousand year history. It was first mentioned in German chronicles in the 11th century as a geographical name. Twenty years later after its first mentioning Lithuania became famous all over Europe. In the 13th century Lithuanian lands became the center around which was formed one of the most powerful states of the European Middle ages - the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The state except Lithuania itself has united the territories of the present Belarus, Ukraine and parts of Russia and Poland.
Today Lithuania is attractive for the tourists due to the achievements of that epoch: the epoch of fair rulers, brave warriors, antique castles and noisy fairs. Trakai, Kernave and Vilnius are those Lithuanian cities where the historic fortune of the great state of the past is depicted very brightly. Kernave and Trakai are the most ancient Lithuanian cities and Vilnius is a former residence of Lithuanian dukes which is the center of the present independent republic.
Rich Lithuanian historical heritage with its picturesque nature and the beauty of the Baltic Sea create the whole picture of one of the best resorts in Eastern Europe. Lithuania is a unique region where the romanticism of the past сonnects with modern comfort and exceptional benevolence of Lithuanian people. By the way, this exceptional benevolence is also a heritage which was given to the residents from their heroic ancestors. To make sure of this fact it’s enough to look at the monument to Gediminas (one of the great Lithuanian dukes), which was installed on one of the main squares of Vilnius. The most important thing which modern descendents managed to keep is the face of a king radiating warmth and peace.
