Church architecture and sacred art

Two distinct periods of construction are important to the church history of Leliūnai. In 1788, manor owner Juozas Pomarnackas had a second wooden church built. The second wooden church had an area of 12 × 28 m². The town’s present-day church was built in 1905. Together, these dates provide a timeline for the town’s architectural history, from the late 18th to the early 20th century.

The Museum of Sacred Art is also located in the town, at Kauno g. 27. The church and museum offer a tangible cultural point of reference if you would like to get to know Leliūnai through its sacred history first.

Forest and trails in the surrounding area

Ąžuolija Forest is located in the Leliūnų eldership and belongs to the northern subregion of the Central European broadleaf forests. Oak, aspen, ash, and lime trees predominate. A 68.2 ha section of the forest was designated the Ąžuolija Botanical-Zoological Municipal Reserve by a resolution of the Utena District Council in 2001. The forest type, tree species, and protected status each describe a different aspect of the landscape around Leliūnai.

The Ąžuolija Nature Trail is also located in the Leliūnų eldership. It is about 1.6 km long, follows a linear route, and is not a loop. For the return journey, follow the same path back; the 2.4 km-long Tylos takas is an alternative return route. Visitors can reach 14 stations along the marked route. When planning, the route is therefore just as important as its length: the nature trail is linear, while Tylos takas is mentioned as an alternative for the return journey.

A 13th-century castle belonging to Daumantas, Duke of Nalšia, is thought to have stood at Narkūnai. A settlement arose near the presumed castle and is considered the origin of the city of Utena; in 1433, it was burned down by the Livonian Order. The castle remains conjectural, while the settlement’s history forms a distinct part of the region’s historical context.
