Yacht rest and sport are traditionally popular in Lithuania. The Baltic seaside gives an opportunity to enjoy wonderful scenery and to compete in boating.
Klaipeda is considered to be the center of yacht sport in Lithuania. Here are created the most comfortable conditions for yacht amateurs. There’s its own yacht club in the town. By the way it’s one of the newest sights of the capital. In 2006 the Lithuanian architect Vladas Balsis created a completely unique architectural project on the basis of the club which combines technological motives and typically port themes along with the set of tendencies of modern art. Except for yacht club in Klaipeda there are also some yacht clubs in the resort village of Nida along the Curonian Spit, in the village of Minia (where the main street located on the river) and at the Smiltine resort not far from Klaipeda which is famous for its clean beaches.
Five or six yachts from Germany or Poland are moored to the port of Klaipeda every day. The popularity of the port in Klaipeda among foreign yachtsmen hasn’t been left without enterprising Lithuanians’ attention. That is why not so long ago the center of yacht service was added to the Klaipeda yacht club. The center is situated in the old building of the 18th century and it offers the tourists a set of service beginning from laundry to the Internet access.
Several regattas are regularly organized in the region of Klaipeda. One of the largest regattas in the Baltic States is the Baltic Sprint Cup that finishes in the port of the town. One more regatta the Baltic Sail starts on one of the merriest holidays of the town where the yachts of several types take part in it. Lithuania is going to hold one of the brightest and colorful regattas in the Baltic States – the races of big historical sailing ships The Tall Ships’ Races.
