Campsites in Lithuania have started to be opened only in the last two decades. Such kind of service being exclusively popular in Western Europe is considered to be an innovation in a number of Eastern European countries. It’s gratifying that Lithuania is not one of these countries.
We can use about one thousand and a half dozens of campsites in Lithuania today. The majority of them are situated in cozy areas of the country: in Aukshtaitskiy and Zhemaitskiy National Parks, on the shores of the Baltic cities (Palanga, Klaipeda, Neringa), near picturesque lakes and also in Druskininkai, Kaunas, Trakai and Vilnius regions. By the way campsite in Vilnius was opened not so long ago and is considered to be one of the largest in Lithuania. It’s able to receive 70 trailers and there’s also space for 30 tents. There was a campsite only in Trakai earlier but there were practically no places during the season.
The season of camping begins as a rule in April- May and finishes in September-October. Prices for basic services in campsites vary within 1-5 euro per day (campsites near the sea are usually the most expensive). Every campsite offers its own services, a person can get either Spartan conditions like “a shower and a toilet» or a full service including a restaurant and sauna, people can also rent tourist’s outfit, billiards and others things.
The rate of campsites is also very different. A recently opened campsite in the suburb of Vilnius was estimated at 2*, another one in Druskininkai - 4*. Some campsites offer a residence in separate houses for example Zhuvedra in Klaipeda or Shilaichai in Druskininkai.
Higher interest to the car tours along Lithuania (and also along Latvia and Estonia) demonstrate the tourists from Germany and Poland. It’s clear that the three Baltic countries are interested in increasing number of tourists, that’s why they try to smooth over all the severities that a car traveler can experience. By the way in summer 2007 Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia altogether prepared a “Map of Baltic camping” especially for them. This map is intended first of all for those who travel by trailers. Except for Lithuanian campsites there are also 42 Latvian and some Estonian campsites.
