Everyday history at the Ignalina Regional Museum

The Ignalina Regional Museum presents the history of the region and its residents alongside crafts, customs and traditions. In the ethnographic exhibition, you can see authentic household items, tools and equipment from the 19th and 20th centuries. These tangible objects from home and work offer an additional perspective on regional ways of life.

Two exhibition themes show different aspects of how people interacted with their surroundings. The display on flax traces its journey from sowing to becoming a bedspread or tablecloth. Another exhibition is devoted to old fishing methods and explains how the fish caught helped the people of the region survive. The museum also regularly organises events, exhibitions and educational activities.

Forest trails and winter sports

The nature trail at Paliesius Manor passes through a quiet, damp forest. It is intended for hiking, jogging and cycling. Cross-country ski trails are set up near the destination in winter. The activities described therefore vary by season: in addition to forest trails, cross-country skiing is also an option in winter.

Another route, the “Pearl Necklace of Ignalina Region’s Sights,” runs through Aukštaitija National Park. The Lithuanian Winter Sports Centre offers downhill skiing. Alongside the forest trail, these are distinct named options for outdoor activities; the routes should not be confused with one another.

Swimming pool, saunas and other facilities

Ignalina Sports and Entertainment Centre offers something different from the forest trails: its facilities include a swimming pool and a bathing complex with a salt steam room, aroma rooms and sauna rooms, as well as Lithuanian and Turkish saunas. There are also mineral-water and fresh-water hot tubs. If you are weighing up outdoor activities and facilities at the centre when planning your trip, these offer two clearly distinct options.

Culture in the surrounding area

Near the destination, Stripeikiai is home to the Beekeeping Museum, with interactive exhibitions and honey tastings. Ginučiai Water Mill is also worth a visit: its exhibition welcomes visitor groups for guided tours by prior reservation. This reservation is a condition of visiting, so plan your trip to the mill accordingly.

At Paliesius Manor, bread and sweet pastries are baked in a traditional birchwood-fired oven using recipes from the culinary heritage. The manor also hosts concerts and educational programmes. Its offerings thus combine culinary themes with cultural events, while the Beekeeping Museum focuses on bees and honey.
