Old Town between the church, market and Šyša

The Evangelical Lutheran church was built in 1926 to a design by architect K. Gutknecht. Its height and three bells make it a prominent landmark; it is also home to Lithuania’s largest tower clock, housed in the 50-metre-high tower. Inside the church, beside the main altar, is a fresco by Richard Pfeifer: 104 people are depicted across 80 square metres. This brings architectural history and visual art together in a single building.

The Old Market Square also speaks to the long history of the town centre: large markets were held there from the 16th century until the Second World War. Old buildings still surround the square. Beneath the asphalt, the stone paving remains intact—a hidden layer of the square’s history, distinct from the surface seen today. The iron arch bridge over the Šyša adds another historic site to the Old Town as an urban monument. Together, the church, market square and bridge offer different points of reference for understanding the architectural history of Šilutė.

The Hugo Šojaus Manor and the details of the town’s history

The state manor, founded in Šilutė in 1721, is an elegant example of Late Classicist and Historicist architecture. Its understated design is considered typical of the Klaipėda region. Since 2015, the Hugo Šojaus Museum has been located in the Hugo Šojaus Manor. Some of the manor’s former farm buildings house restoration and education centres. These different uses make the manor another point of reference for the town’s cultural history, though not all the facilities serve the same purpose.

The town’s history can also be encountered outside the manor, in various forms. The 500-metre-long “Šilutės sienos” highlights important events in the town’s history and notable figures from the region. The “Šilutės sekretai” project takes a different approach: twenty miniature rooms covered with glass are set into the pavement of Lietuvininkų Street. They depict everyday life in historic houses from the late 19th to the early 20th century. In this way, wall displays and glimpses into former homes offer different ways of exploring the town’s history.
