The delta, Cape Ventė and bird migration
At Cape Ventė, a distinctive landscape setting meets the history of birdwatching. The red-brick lighthouse was built in 1852 and can be climbed free of charge for a view of the surroundings. Check access conditions before your visit. The station at the cape has Europe’s largest traps for catching migratory birds. The trails also have different points of focus. The Aukštumala nature trail offers insights into a raised bog, its characteristic plants and animals, and the landscape. The Kintai Forestry District nature trail focuses on observation towers overlooking the Curonian Lagoon. The Great Kintai Giant Thuja offers something different: it is considered the largest thuja in Lithuania and is about 19.5 metres tall, with a crown approximately 12 metres wide.
Manor houses, museums and local history
In Šilutė, Hugo Šojus Manor brings together several eras: founded as a state manor in 1721, the building is considered an elegant example of late Classicism and Historicism and features decoration typical of the Klaipėda Region. Since 2015, it has housed the Hugo Šojus Museum. Another building in Kintai tells a story of educational history: the Vydūnas Cultural Centre and Memorial Museum is located in the former school dating from 1705, where Vilhelmas Storosta-Vydūnas worked from 1888 to 1892.
The Švėkšna Museum’s Švėkšna Exhibition offers further topics. Its four exhibition halls are devoted to ethnography, archaeology, the history of the manor and local history. The Vilkėnai Manor ensemble was built between 1880 and 1897. It includes a two-storey Neo-Renaissance manor house with a tower and a park with a mixed design. Those interested in rural ways of life can also learn about fishing and household objects, as well as the lifestyle and activities of a typical fishing farmer from the Klaipėda Region, at the Ethnographic Fishing Village Museum.
The history of technology and activities on the water
The Šilutė Polder Museum is housed in the Uostadvaris water pumping station, built in 1907; access is limited. The Uostadvaris Lighthouse is 18 metres tall, is considered a technical monument and serves as an observation tower with views of the surroundings of Rusnė and Minija. It is no longer used for navigation. In Kintai, the small-craft harbour was established in 2014 to meet the needs of fishermen and tourists. Water- and land-based tourism activities are offered in the village of Minija, including boating and water skiing.
