Culture

The Alytus–Varėna cycling route includes 17 preserved former railway structures. Many of them were entered into the Register of Cultural Heritage of Lithuania in 2017–2018, creating an open-air experience of railway heritage.

The route is approximately 50 kilometers long and runs mainly along gravel and forest paths. About 10 kilometers are paved, there are no climbs, and children can manage the route comparatively easily.

The Olita–Orany route (Alytus–Varėna) can be started in Varėna at the railway station and followed in the direction of Alytus.

History

Varėna is historically connected with the railway: the city developed along the Warsaw–Vilnius–Saint Petersburg railway line and was first mentioned in 1413.
