Geographical location
Daugai is located in the Alytus District Municipality in Alytus County in southern Lithuania, 22 km east of Alytus and an equal distance northwest of Varėna. The city is located 1 km south of Highway 128, the Naujieji Valkininkai–Daugai–Alytus route.
History
Daugai is an urban monument in southern Lithuania; the city plan is linear and features distinctive rectangular elements in its layout.
The central part of Daugai’s historic urban structure, established around 1560, was expanded in 1928. Daugai was first mentioned in written records in 1384 and referred to as a city in 1503. A Catholic church was built in Daugai in 1862.
Archaeology
Archaeological investigations were carried out in the historic part of Daugai in 2013. A total of 42 test trenches were examined and 89 finds were recorded, including ceramic fragments from the 16th to the 18th century.
