Museums, places of remembrance and urban history
In the municipality concerned, the synagogue complex on today’s Sodų Street was the most important centre of Jewish community and religious life until the Second World War. Street art is a landmark of Marijampolė: new drawings appear on buildings every year, attracting local and international tourists. The county therefore offers both places of remembrance and art in public spaces.
The birthplace of Jono Basanavičius features a reconstructed single farmstead belonging to a prosperous Suvalkija farmer. It includes traditional residential and farm buildings typical of the region, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum there has been operating since 1991. Its themes range from the everyday life of a prosperous Suvalkija farmer to the ethnic culture typical of Sūduva, and the life and work of Jono Basanavičius.
The Vinco Kudirka Museum introduces Vincas Kudirka, author of the Lithuanian national anthem, and the place where he spent the last years of his life. Another exhibition, “City by the River Šešupė”, traces the city’s history from its founding to the restoration of Lithuania’s independence. It covers changes to the city’s name, heraldry and city plans from different periods. Tours are offered in Lithuanian; a tour of Kudirkos Naumiestis is also available. Book tours in advance.
The Marijampolė Regional Museum and President Kazys Grinius Museum preserve around 40,000 exhibits relating to everyday life and ethnography, visual arts, literature, photography, numismatics and archaeology. The “Spirit of the Nation” exhibition explores prehistory and the spiritual and ethnographic heritage of Suvalkija (Sūduva). Together, the collections offer perspectives on urban history, regional culture and a range of subjects.
Nature trails and landscapes
The Buktos Nature Trail is in the municipality of Marijampolė, six kilometres southeast of Liudvinavas. The two stated route lengths, 1.3 and 1.7 kilometres, offer a practical comparison when planning a walk. At seven stops, visitors can learn about hornbeam forests, riparian forests and swampy deciduous forests, as well as the local plant and animal species.
The rest area has a shelter, swings, waste bins and a toilet. Visitors can hang a pot over the specially designated fire pit, cook soup and eat in the forest. Another nature trail, Amalva, leads into the Amalva bog, one of the largest bogs in Suvalkija. Information boards cover the bog’s history, its ecosystem and its flora and fauna.
The landscape of Vištytis Regional Park tells the story of the last Ice Age: glacial tongues formed the highest hills of the Suwałki Upland, created the basin of Lake Vištytis, brought large erratic boulders to the surface and turned lower-lying areas into wetlands. The Maumedžių Grove near the Polish border is 150 years old. More than 60 larches grow there, reaching around 30 metres in height; there is also a rest area. The Vištytis windmill is a striking feature of the landscape.
Cultural heritage and special collections
Paežeriai Manor is of historical, architectural, urban and landscape value. In 1992, it was added to the list of protected sites as a cultural property of national significance. In Gižai, the manor’s two-storey brick granary has been preserved; the manor estate has been mentioned since the 18th century.
Smaller museums also offer unusual insights: the Hammer Museum in Degučiai displays around 1,000 hammers, each numbered and labelled with its country of origin and purpose. The Cross-Stitch Pictures Museum features a world map that is 1.6 metres long and more than one metre high, with over 250,000 cross-stitches. These specific collection details offer a different perspective from the broader themes of regional and urban history.
Sudargas Hillfort Day is held every year at the hillforts during the Joninės (Rasos) celebrations. If the event fits your travel plans, check the dates for the edition you’d like to attend. You can then compare hotel offers with the visits that matter to you.
