Culture and history
Šakiai is a small town in Lithuania’s Marijampolė County and the seat of Šakiai District Municipality.
The first church in Šakiai was founded in 1719. In the mid-19th century, the town received municipal rights; at that time, there were four schools there.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Šakiai was built in 1842, and its tower was added in 1877.
Šakiai was heavily destroyed during the Second World War; this destruction is part of the city’s documented historical context.
