Culture and history

Šakiai is a small town in Lithuania’s Marijampolė County and the seat of Šakiai District Municipality.

The first church in Å akiai was founded in 1719. In the mid-19th century, the town received municipal rights; at that time, there were four schools there.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Å akiai was built in 1842, and its tower was added in 1877.

Šakiai was heavily destroyed during the Second World War; this destruction is part of the city’s documented historical context.
