Experience forests and forestry

The Kazlų Rūda Forest Museum focuses on forest plants and trees, as well as tree pests and diseases. Historic forestry tools complement these topics and can be tried out. This draws attention both to nature and to work in the forest.

The Kazlų Rūdos pažintinis miško takas educational trail combines nature themes with insights into the history of forestry. Visitors can learn about forest animals or plants and the history of forestry. There is also an information board about iron ore mining and a bunker used by Lithuanian partisans. The topics thus range from the forest itself to its use and traces of history.

For planning purposes, the difference between the routes is clear: the trail offers four kilometres on foot or 6.5 kilometres by bike. First decide which way of getting around better suits your plans, and check current trail conditions before setting off.

Town park, birdsong and art

The town park was created from a young pine forest and was formerly called Nepriklausomybės parkas. Its bird trail adds a distinctive nature experience to the forest setting: visitors can see nesting boxes and hear birdsong. How much you hear depends on the birds’ activity at the time.

Mėnulio parkas offers a different focus, with the silver artwork “Pora,” which symbolizes closeness and warmth. Together with the bird trail, it shows how varied a visit to the parks can be: one time, listening to birds is the main attraction; another, it is an artwork and its meaning.

The wooden train sculpture makes its own statement, too. Since 2014, it has adorned a small square next to the church in Kazlų Rūda and serves as a symbolic reminder of the importance of the railway to the town’s growth. A mighty oak, more than 100 years old, also stands next to the railway station.

Exhibitions and city history

The Kazlų Rūda Regional Museum exhibition is located in the Tourism and Business Information Centre. Opened in 2022, it presents the town’s history in a modern, interactive way. Its themes include the railway, prosperity during the interwar period and partisan battles in the deep forests. It revisits themes that can also be encountered in the town and on the educational trail, placing them in a broader historical context.

Senamiesčio galerija extends along a section of Vytauto Street and invites visitors to see two exhibitions at a time. Coming from the railway station, photographs about the town’s history accompany you along the way; from the other side, works by students of the Lithuanian Academy of Arts welcome visitors. You can discover the art along the street from either direction.
