Geographical Location

Eišiškės is a city in southeastern Lithuania on the border with Belarus.

Nature

The city lies amid a wooded group of hills on the Verseka River. The river separates the northern district of Jurzdika and flows toward the Merkys.

Culture

Eišiškės has a strongly Polish-influenced minority character: In the 2021 census, more than 80 % of residents were recorded as Polish-speaking. This makes the Polish influence a specific cultural aspect for visitors who are interested in it.

The town's first church school began operating in 1524.

The documented Jewish heritage includes reports of Jewish tombstones dating back to the late 11th century; the tombstones themselves no longer exist.

Eišiškės is first mentioned in the Königsberg Treaty of 1384 between Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania and the Teutonic Order.
