Lithuanian Spa Resorts
You might expect to find many spa resorts in Lithuania. The country is known for its unspoiled natural landscapes, the sea and its relatively few industrial centres. However, only four places in Lithuania are officially recognised and promoted as spa resorts. The spa resorts of Lithuania are defined by their therapeutic climate, minerals, balneology and seaside bathing. As well as spa treatments, these features make Lithuania a destination for preventive health trips, wellness holidays and medical wellness.
Palanga, Neringa, Druskininkai and Birštonas are Lithuania’s four spa resorts. The four resorts are almost evenly divided between the country’s inland and coastal regions. Hotels and holiday apartments are available in all four, although, as you might expect, Palanga has more holiday apartments than, for example, Birštonas. The two inland spa resorts, Birštonas and Druskininkai, are both known for their therapeutic climates. For decades—or, more accurately, for over a century—Druskininkai has had a refined reputation and attracted the rich and famous from Moscow, St Petersburg, Warsaw and Vilnius. Birštonas, meanwhile, was already well known for its thermal springs and spa treatments during the era of the Teutonic Order. Both resorts are centres of balneology, attracting visitors with water and mud therapies. Together with the peat bogs, mineral water and excellent air, they offer treatments primarily aimed at prevention and improving quality of life. These include treatments for conditions affecting the skin, blood vessels, heart, joints and digestive system.
The other two Lithuanian spa resorts, Palanga and Neringa, are on the coast. Palanga is the largest of Lithuania’s spa resorts and, thanks to its popularity with tourists, is often called Lithuania’s summer capital. This former fishing village is known for its amber, spectacular sandy beaches and outstanding dune landscapes. With its parks, the Baltic Sea’s therapeutic climate and its sanatoriums, Palanga is one of Lithuania’s most valuable spa resorts. The Curonian Spit has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, and Neringa is located there. Spa treatments and wellness are the main attractions of this Lithuanian seaside resort. Yet Humboldt’s records and the accounts of Thomas Mann and Hermann Blode show that Neringa, with its fascinating setting, is also well worth a relaxing or nature-focused trip to Lithuania. The natural environment and history of Neringa and the Curonian Spit offer many sights, including the dunes, colonies of grey herons and cormorants, and the wooden sculptures on Witches’ Hill.
