Kaziukas 2009
On the first weekend of March, Vilnius and other cities in Lithuania will celebrate the Kaziukas festival. This year, the festival will be held from March 7 to 8, 2009. Kaziukas is similar to many of Europe's large carnival parades, but in Lithuania it is somewhat more restrained, reflecting the local temperament and weather conditions. As for the festival itself, it will be as lively and interesting as in previous years. However, there are still some organizational challenges related to the economic crisis. It is therefore not yet clear who will organize the traditional Kaziukas Fair. The regular organizer, entrepreneur Vitjanis Urba, who had been organizing the fair for eight years, has withdrawn from this year's event due to a lack of funds.
Among the other changes, the arrival of genuine old-fashioned horse-drawn carriages in Vilnius is worth noting; this new feature will be introduced on March 7. The carriages will run regularly along their designated routes during the Kaziukas festival: from the former Children's World store to the Seimas, and from Cathedral Square to the Timo district.
For the first time, the fairground will be divided into four zones, so traditional crafts can be showcased in the best locations. Another new feature: this year, not only craftspeople but also business representatives will be selling their products.
