Niko Pirosmani Painting Exhibition
From December 31 until May, an exhibition of paintings by the renowned Georgian artist Niko Pirosmani will be held in Vilnius. Thirty-five paintings arrived in the capital on December 23 and are now at the Vilnius Picture Gallery.

After the exhibition opens, a segment from Eimuntas Nekrošius’s production “Pirosmani, Pirosmani” is also scheduled to be shown.
Niko Pirosmani (1862–1918) is Georgia’s best-known painter of the twentieth century, a self-taught artist and one of the world’s finest practitioners of “naive art.” He painted on inexpensive black oilcloth, which he made himself, leaving parts of it unpainted and highlighting only the brightest areas. Some of his works are painted signs, while others are murals created to decorate interiors. Animals feature prominently in his work. The animals depicted by the painter do not closely resemble their real-life counterparts, but they do look very much like one another. Some people claim that the animals in the paintings have the artist’s eyes.
