Nature

There are 37 lakes in Veisiejai Regional Park. With an area of 490.8 ha, Lake Ančia is the park’s largest lake. The townscape also includes Veisiejai Manor Park, a dendrologically valuable park covering an area of 9.53 ha, which was designated a state-protected natural heritage site in 2007. It is home to a circle of 21 lime trees planted in the second half of the 18th century.

Culture

The present-day stone Church of St. George in Veisiejai was built in 1817. It is an architectural monument featuring a combination of Baroque and Classicist forms that is unique in Lithuania.

The Veisiejų krašto muziejus Museum presents material about the ophthalmologist and creator of the international language Esperanto, Liudvikas Lazaris Zamenhof, who came to Veisiejai in 1885 and completed the development of the Esperanto language there. The organist and composer Juozas Neimontas, as well as the poet Sigitas Geda, are also featured. Other exhibits cover the history of the school in Veisiejai, the deportation of people from this region, and other local historical topics.

The Albino Jarmala Calendar Museum contains more than 4,000 exhibits, including calendars from various countries around the world. Visits are possible by prior telephone arrangement.

The visitor centre of Veisiejai Regional Park features the indoor exhibition “Gyvenimas tarp vandenų”. The “Stebuklingų ančių” programme starts at Dariaus ir Girėno g. 6 in Veisiejai and takes place by prior telephone registration at +370 612 33044.

Routes

There are 10 tourist routes in Veisiejai Regional Park. They run along the shore of the park’s largest lake, Ančia, through the hilly Šlavantų kraštas area, around Kapčiamiestis and through the Petroškai Forest.

The “Stebuklingų ančių” route is a 3.7 km adventure route through Veisiejai featuring six symbolic ducks. The guided programme presents the history of Veisiejai, its cultural and natural heritage, and the work of writers who lived there in an entertaining format. Participants hear a legend and search for the six ducks hidden around the town.
