EU-wide programme “South Baltic Region”
The EU-wide programme “South Baltic Region” is gradually getting underway. The participating EU coastal countries have now defined strategies and set out initial steps that will also benefit Lithuania economically and in terms of tourism. German companies from the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are also involved in the project.
At a meeting in Palanga in Lithuania, the committee for the EU-wide “South Baltic Region” programme approved ten of the 24 project proposals submitted. One of these projects aims to establish new flight routes in the South Baltic Region. The project, called “South Baltic Global Access”, is led by the German company Rostock Business (Wirtschafts- und Technologieförderung Rostock GmbH). Its goal is to improve connectivity between distant regions and regional airports, including those in Lithuania.
Rostock Business is assessing the potential of possible routes by examining the current situation. The aim is to establish new air links to Småland Airport in Sweden and to Klaipėda in Lithuania. This will improve access to the southern Baltic Sea region by air. The first step is to develop a joint strategy for the South Baltic Region. This includes identifying the tourism strengths and attractions of each region that can be promoted together to increase their appeal to tourists in Lithuania, Sweden and other regions.
Europe is drawing closer together: the EU-wide programme “South Baltic Region” is a step towards connecting the coastal countries of the southern Baltic Sea region and pooling their potential in tourism and business.
