ARTE reports on Lithuania
Anyone wishing to learn more about Lithuania and its people—and, above all, its regional delicacies—should watch today’s episode of “A Table in …”, presented by the Franco-German channel ARTE at 5:45 p.m. Those unable to watch can make a note of the repeat: “A Table in … Lithuania” will be broadcast again on ARTE on Saturday, April 17, 2010, at 1:00 p.m.
“A Table in … Lithuania”: A fascinating glimpse into life in Lithuania
In this episode of “A Table in …”, the television crew visits Lithuania, where the focus is on two Lithuanian families, the Gecas and the Petrosius, who live by the small Lithuanian river Minija, which flows into the Nemunas not far from the Curonian Spit. The families are friends and regularly get together to cook and eat. Their shared cooking sessions feature Lithuanian specialties such as seasoned kilu (an Estonian sprat), cold soups, and a baumkuchen tower, a staple at every celebration in Lithuania. “A Table in … Lithuania” also introduces viewers to other Lithuanian specialties, including various potato dishes enriched with sour cream and dill, cepelinai (potato dumplings filled with pork), and kugelis (potato casserole with chicken breast). Anyone who wants an authentic glimpse of life in Lithuania—and especially of the country’s cooking and eating habits—should tune in when ARTE broadcasts “A Table in … Lithuania”: no travel guide can even begin to convey impressions like these. And viewers inspired to recreate Lithuanian dishes after the program will find plenty of tips and ideas in the show.
