Lithuania is worth a visit

Lithuania is the largest of the three Baltic states and has been a member of the European Union since 2004. Despite this, Lithuania is unfortunately still an insider tip when German tourists are planning their holidays. This does the country a disservice, however, as it has a great deal to offer for all kinds of vacations.

Unfortunately, Lithuania is still largely unknown to most Germans. Yet the conditions for visiting Lithuania have continued to improve in recent years: At the end of December 2007, Lithuania joined the Schengen Area, eliminating lengthy border checks for people entering the country. Travellers entering or leaving the country no longer have to undergo the passport checks that were previously required. These checks at Lithuania’s airports were abolished in March 2008. After Lithuania was denied entry to the eurozone in 2007 because of its high inflation rate, the outlook is now considerably brighter, despite the global economic crisis, which has naturally affected Lithuania too. The current Lithuanian government has announced that the euro could be introduced sometime between 2012 and 2015.

Attractions in Lithuania for a relaxing holiday

Above all, the Baltic coast and the Curonian Spit are already growing in popularity among tourists visiting Lithuania. Although tourism numbers are rising, this beautiful Baltic country—with its numerous rivers and lakes, extensive forests, and impressive flora and fauna—remains an insider tip. Lithuania offers its visitors a wealth of different experiences: a rich cultural heritage, diverse natural scenery, and ideal conditions for a relaxing beach holiday. And all at reasonable prices: life in Lithuania is still very affordable. A city break, for example to Vilnius, which shared the title of European Capital of Culture with Linz in 2009, is also highly recommended.
