The Curonian Spit advances to the second round of the competition to name the natural wonders of the world
The Curonian Spit, a major attraction of Lithuania and Russia’s Kaliningrad Region, has advanced to the second round of the international competition “New7Wonders of Nature.” The project was organized in 2007 by the non-profit New7Wonders Foundation. The competition aims to select seven unique natural sites that have remained untouched by civilization. A total of 261 natural sites from North and South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania will compete for the title in the second round. Voting takes place on www.new7wonders.com and will continue until July 7, 2009. The 21 finalists will then be selected, and the final round of voting will begin at the end of July and conclude in autumn 2009.

The Curonian Spit is a sandy peninsula on the Baltic Sea coast, shared by Russia’s Kaliningrad Region and Lithuania. It is 98 km long and between 400 m and 3.8 km wide. Its natural landscapes are diverse, ranging from sandy, desert-like areas to birch and coniferous forests. The Curonian Spit is often called a bird bridge. One of the oldest bird migration routes from Northern Europe to Southern Europe and North Africa passes through here. On the Lithuanian side of the spit, the largest settlement is Nida, while the smaller settlements are Preila, Pervalka, Juodkrantė and Smiltynė.
