History
Preila was established around 1850 through the settlement of Curonian Spit fishing families from Neegeln and Karwaiten. The villages of Neegeln and Karwaiten, located near Preila, were buried beneath drifting dunes; toward the end of the 19th century, the sand was stabilized through planting.
