ZDF films in Lithuania

German public-service broadcaster ZDF began filming a three-part series in Lithuania this week. The film tells the story of the World War II generation and has the provisional working title “Our Mothers, Our Fathers.”

Two people who have made a name for themselves in recent years are responsible for the ZDF film: Philipp Kadelbach, who recently impressed with his work on the two-part film “Hindenburg,” has been secured as director of the new ZDF series. The screenplay is by Stefan Kolditz, who also wrote the script for the acclaimed film “Dresden.” It is known so far that Katharina Schüttler, Volker Bruch, Ludwig Trepte and Tom Schilling are among the cast of the series, which is being filmed largely in Lithuania.

Producer Nico Hofmann (“Teamworx”) said that the three-part series being filmed in Lithuania is intended as a tribute to the wartime generation. The ZDF series tells the story of five friends, newly come of age, whose lives represent the generation that went to war for Hitler and the Nazis. Teamworx, the production company handling the project, has extensive experience bringing historical subjects to the screen. The company was also responsible for conceiving and producing RTL’s two-part film “Hindenburg.”

According to the current plans of those responsible, filming on the new ZDF series, provisionally titled “Our Mothers, Our Fathers,” will continue until the end of July 2011. In addition to locations in Lithuania, the team will also film in several German states: North Rhine-Westphalia, Berlin, Saxony-Anhalt, Lower Saxony, Brandenburg and Bavaria. So far, neither the production team nor ZDF has been able to provide details of a definitive broadcast date.

Given the track records of the screenwriter, director and production company, the team promises an authentic and historically accurate work. Fans of historical films set during World War II can already look forward to an entertaining television experience.
