Lithuania and Salzburg celebrate their partnership anniversary
Lithuania and its capital, Vilnius, are looking forward to a joyful occasion this autumn. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the partnership between the State of Salzburg, a federal state in Austria, and Lithuania, while the partnership between Vilnius and Salzburg, established in 1990, can also celebrate a milestone anniversary. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Lithuania’s independence, the existing partnership between Lithuania and the State of Salzburg in Austria was extended to include ties between Vilnius and Salzburg. A variety of cultural events will take place in Salzburg in the coming weeks, some of which will also be held in Vilnius in October 2010.

Most of the cultural events are concerts and exhibitions celebrating the two anniversaries of the partnerships between Lithuania and the State of Salzburg, and between Vilnius and Salzburg. For the opening of the festival weeks in Salzburg, a distinguished guest from Lithuania, Culture Minister Dr Arunas Gelunas, is expected to arrive in Austria on 23 and 24 September 2010. This unique cultural event was initiated by Hofrat Dr Peter Krön, who served as Lithuania’s honorary consul in Salzburg from 1993 to 2010. Rita Valiuconyté, Cultural Attaché at the Lithuanian Embassy in Salzburg, is also lending her patronage to the events marking the partnership anniversaries between Salzburg and Lithuania, and between Salzburg and Vilnius.
What began in 1970 as a rather irregular exchange between Lithuania and the State of Salzburg, limited to cultural matters, has since grown into a close partnership that also encompasses economic and political aspects. The anniversary events will be on view in Vilnius for several weeks from October 2010, providing an additional incentive for an autumn city break in Lithuania.
