New flights to Kaunas from May 2010
From the start of the upcoming summer schedule, in May 2010, the British airline Ryanair will begin serving Kaunas (Lithuania) Airport with new flights. This will give the Lithuanian city additional options for holidaymakers travelling to and from the area. Ryanair and Kaunas’s tourism sector have high hopes for the new routes and the new base at Kaunas Airport.
New flight routes: a boost for tourism in Kaunas
Ryanair’s new flight routes, which will make Kaunas its 40th base when they launch in May 2010, will be operated using two aircraft. As part of this expansion, two new routes will also be added between Lithuania and Germany: to Berlin-Schönefeld and Düsseldorf-Weeze. The new routes will begin operating weekly on 3 May 2010. Flights to Berlin will run four times a week and to Weeze three times a week. The new routes will secure more than 800 jobs in Kaunas. The British airline is investing more than US$140 million in its base at Kaunas Airport. Tourism in Kaunas will benefit from this development, as holidaymakers from other European countries will have new travel options to reach the city.
Reactions to the launch of new flights to Kaunas
Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary said in an official press release about the airline’s new flights to Kaunas: “We are pleased to be able to develop Kaunas as our 40th base, with a total of nine new routes, including two to Germany.”
From Germany, Kaunas Airport is already served by flights from Bremen and Frankfurt-Hahn airports.
