According to Freedom House’s assessment, Lithuania is a free country

This conclusion can be drawn after studying the annual assessment recently published by the international organization Freedom House. Lithuania received the highest rating: 1 point (out of a possible 7), which means that excellent conditions for political competition have been created here, citizens’ rights and freedoms are respected and upheld, and independent mass media operate freely.

The assessment covered a total of 193 countries, of which 90 were recognized as free, 43 as not free, and 60 as partly free. Among the countries of particular interest, all European Union countries received 1 point, except Bulgaria, Greece, Latvia, and Romania, which received 1.5 points. As for Lithuania’s neighbors, Estonia and Poland received 1 point, Latvia 1.5 points, Russia 5.5 points, and Belarus 6.51 points. It should be noted that Russia and Belarus improved their scores by 0.5 points compared with 2007; nevertheless, these countries’ ratings remain very low. Interestingly, Freedom House included South Ossetia in the “Disputed Territories” category for the first time in its assessment.

The worst rating (7 points) was given to Cuba, Burma, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, Somalia, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. This means that in these countries, citizens’ political and civil rights are severely violated, and free mass media are absent.

It can be concluded that around 3 billion people live in free countries, 1.2 billion in partly free countries, and 2.4 billion in countries that are not free.
